Leveraging Firefighting Tactics Using Drones

Saving lives does not come easy.

As firefighters, having the training and expertise in the field does not always guarantee smooth operations. There is a need for a great tool and using drones is an option.

Also known as unmanned aerial systems, drones have been a rising trend among the firefighting and emergency industries worldwide.

Many fire departments have already used drones to improve firefighters’ safety and operational effectiveness. It provides useful data that are useful in several ways to save lives and mitigate damages.
Before a fire even starts, drone technology has the ability to map risky and unsafe surfaces within the area. This is difficult to assess without having an aerial view of the scene. Hence, having a complete aerial view allows firefighters to prepare and understand the risks before they enter.

This makes the whole evacuation and response process more
successful than the old tactics. Yet, proper training and orientation should be conducted beforehand to ensure smooth fire operations utilizing drones.
As with many evolving technologies, unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) guarantee improved efficiencies, increased operational capabilities, and significant cost savings for law enforcement and public safety agencies.

UAS changes how law enforcement agencies tackle missions, particularly those missions where every second count - from search and rescue to accident investigation and crowd control to crisis management. Because of its efficiency and capabilities, It is considered an integral part of how the police respond to emergencies.

WHY USE DRONES IN FIREFIGHTING?

  • Search and Rescue
Fires create thick smoke and ash that affects visibility in the area. This makes the work difficult, especially if there are people to be rescued from the scene.

Drones fitted with thermal cameras are useful in this situation. What the naked eyes cannot see becomes visible when such a camera is used. It can spot humans within minutes and provide effective measures to rescue them the safest way possible.
  • Hazard Assessment
Drones are known for three things: bird’s eye view, reduced hazards, and deployability. These three factors make them the best tools when responding to a fire alarm. One quick drone fly-by can give the firefighters enough information about the location, people, and the risks involved.

It can give thorough information for hazard assessment in just a few minutes. There is no doubt it is the best tool to use. Hence, a few minutes’ worth of flight is invaluable.
  • Crew Management
Drones provide effective strategies to help deployed crew members navigate easily around the target area. Most field commanders can still fly drones even after the operation started. Doing this allows the in-charge to monitor the situation and stop potential safety issues that may not be visible to the people on the ground.
  • Illumination
Some drones can have a simple flashlight to provide illumination for the firefighting crew. It is not viable to work in the dark and could be more risky for the team, so utilizing drones with flashlights do wonders. This is much better than handheld ones because it can be deployed by the member whenever it is needed.
  • Hot Spots Identification
After putting out the fire, firefighters still need to look for “hot spots'' or those small smoldering embers left at the scene. Small fires can ignite easily and spread which means putting out a larger fire if left unattended. However, with drones, it is possible to locate these embers before another disaster begins.
